TOWSON, Md. — Winners of just one of its past five games, the Elizabethtown College women's team was looking for a way to right the ship, and found that way Saturday at Goucher.
Rachel Forjan put in 15 of her team-high 17 points in the first half to get E-town off to a fast start in its 62-49 Landmark Conference win over the Gophers.
Taylor Alwine kept the Elizabethtown (10-4, 4-4 Landmark) offensive possession alive with an offensive board and
Emily Martin would find Forjan for the first bucket of the game. After Martin tacked on one of two free throws, Forjan connected on her first trey of the game to send the Jays out to a 6-0 lead.
Goucher (4-11, 0-7 Landmark) came back to its first lead of the game at 10-9 with 12:36 left in the first half. Both teams traded baskets before
Nikki Thompson put E-town back in the lead at 15-14. Forjan then hit a layup and three-pointer on consecutive possessions to extend the advantage up to six, 20-14. After Olivia Nono split a pair at the foul line, Forjan canned her third three of the half to give EC its biggest lead of the night to that point, 23-15 with 8:44 to go in the half.
After a
Krissy Pennell jumper, Dominique White hit a trey for Goucher as the Gophers looked to chip away at Elizabethtown's lead. However, Forjan was in the zone, hitting yet another jumper, this time off an
Alyssa Aichele assist. Aichele was good on a jumper of her own next time down with
Erika Ferro drawing the assist.
With under a minute left in the first half, Pennell found Martin down low for a layup, then the sophomore center was good on two free throws with 27 seconds before the break, E-town up 35-23, its largest lead of the first 20 minutes. They went into halftime up 35-24.
The Jays' defense held Goucher to just eight made field goals in the second half. Despite shooting just 30 percent and being outshot at the foul line nine (of 15) to seven (of 11), E-town outscored the Gophers 27-25 in the second half.
Alwine and
Marissa Gingrich each had seven second-half points to lead the Blue Jays. Aichele added five and Pennell had four, all at the foul line.
Goucher used a 6-0 run to open the second half to get within two possessions and would eventually get the score tied up at 39-39 with 12:25 left. Forjan broke the deadlock with two free throws, her only two points of the second half, but they would be the ones to send E-town back into the lead for good.
Gingrich's layup and three-pointer pushed a two-point lead to seven points in a minute's worth of time. Nono's jumper with 7:36 to go would get the Gophers within three points, but that's the closest they would get the rest of the way.
Pennell dished to
Emily Young in the paint and the senior would finish to give E-town a double-digit lead, which would remain for the rest of the game.
The women's basketball team will play once more on the road before returning home to the Thomp. The Jays are away at Merchant Marine on Monday, January 19, to face the Mariners at 2 p.m.
