KING'S POINT, N.Y. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball received team-wide contributions in its 77-36 win over Merchant Marine Monday afternoon in Landmark Conference action.
Rachel Forjan led the Jays with a game-high 13 points and was one of 14 different players to score for E-town. The 41-point victory is the biggest margin in a win since February 10, 2014 when the Blue Jays defeated Arcadia 80-31.
After
Krissy Pennell assisted on Forjan's opening bucket of the game, Tichina Carmon hit Merchant Marine's (2-13, 0-10 Landmark) first shot on its first possession to tie it at 2-2. It would be the only time in the game the Mariners would tie the game as Elizabethtown (11-4, 5-4 Landmark) took off from there.
The Jays started the contest 10-for-15 from the floor and led 22-11 with nine minutes to go in the first half. Forjan, Pennell, and
Emily Martin combined for seven of the nine made field goals and accounted for 14 of the 22 points.
E-town's defense pounced on Merchant Marine giveaways, forcing 19 first-half turnovers and converting those into 18 points.
Rachel Liszkiewicz and
Marissa Gingrich both had three steals a piece to lead the defense in the first half.
Elizabethtown also dominated the paint, scoring 26 points in the painted area in the first 20 minutes. The Blue Jays recorded nine offensive boards, including three from
Corinne Foster.
By the end of the first half, E-town led 40-13, holding USMMA to 5-for-19 shooting (26.3%). On the other end, the Jays shot 18-for-33 (54.5%). Forjan,
Erika Ferro, and
Emma Hoesman each had six points.
Jenny Welch and Foster had four apiece while
Emily Young and Gingrich both had two points.
Martin scored the first six points of the second half for Elizabethtown. She was 3-for-3 from the floor and 2-for-2 at the foul line, finishing a perfect 5-for-5 on the day for 12 points. Forjan added seven second-half points.
The bench saw plenty of playing time as the starters got E-town's lead up to 30, 55-25, with 13:21 showing on the clock. The Jays' non-starters contributed 46 of the team's 77 points in the game.
Rachel Schultz had seven points in the second half while
Meredith Holley added five.
Nikki Thompson, Hoesman, Ferro, and Liszkiewicz also registered points for E-town in the final half.
Merchant Marine's 36 points is the fewest Elizabethtown has given up this season while holding the Mariners to 23.6% shooting, also a season-best defensively for the Jays. Carmon led USMMA with seven points.
Forjan added five assists to go with her 13 points. Hoesman led all bench scorers with eight, while Ferro had seven points and five rebounds.
Morgan Thomas had a team-best seven boards.
The Blue Jays will have the rest of the week off as they prepare to face Susquehanna on Saturday, January 24 at Thompson Gymnasium. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
