MADISON, N.J. — It was the first time the two schools met on the court, and now Drew holds a 1-0 lead in the series after beating the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team Wednesday night in Landmark Conference action. The Rangers outscored the Blue Jays by seven in each half en route to a 14-point, 65-51 win. Four Drew starters reached double digits, while three accumulated double figures for E-town in the loss.
Drew (8-7, 3-4 Landmark) started off by making three of its first five shots to jump out to a 7-2 lead after three minutes of play.
Rachel Forjan hit the first shot of the night for Elizabethtown (9-4, 3-4 Landmark), but the Jays went scoreless over the next three minutes until
Emily Martin's layup cut the deficit in half to 8-4 with 16:05 left in the first half.
Martin made it back-to-back layups to make it a two-point game, but Hannah Miller connected on a three-point try to extend it back to five.
Alyssa Aichele brought E-town within two once again with a three-pointer of her own. She had five points in the first half. Her jumper a minute and a half later tied the game at 11-11.
Elizabethtown took its first lead of the game with 7:52 to go in the first half when
Nikki Thompson dished to
Emily Young, who knocked down her jumper. Young scored all six of the Jays' bench points. EC led 15-13 after her basket.
Off a missed three, Aichele collected one of her six first-half rebounds and began the fast break, finding Forjan for the layup to give the Blue Jays a four-point lead. It only lasted a minute, as the Rangers score four quick points to knot the game back up.
Drew outscored Elizabethtown 11-4 the remainder of the half and went into the break with a 28-21 lead.
Two foul shots by Martin and a jumper in the paint from
Krissy Pennell had the Jays within four early on in the second half, but E-town couldn't start a run without the Rangers having an answer. Each time the game was within a single possession, Drew was able to extend its lead.
With the Rangers attempting to pull away, Alwine did her best to keep E-town in striking distance. The senior forward scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half. In a minute and 20 second span, she accounted three straight buckets to keep Drew's lead at seven points. Forjan hit a trey to cut it down to six, 44-38, with 8:47 remaining.
Back up by 13 after Courtney Trzasko's three, Drew's largest lead at that point, Alwine and Forjan combined to bring it back down to single digits with a jumper on the fast break and another three-pointer, both assisted by Aichele.
Any momentum the Jays got, the Rangers seized it back and eventually got the advantage back over ten points. Aichele's jumper with less than a minute left got E-town within ten at 61-51, but by then it was too big a lead to overcome.
Trzasko had 15 points to lead Drew on the night. Miller was a point behind her at 14, while Courtney Stephens (13 points) and Breana Wilson (12 points) were also in double figures.
Alwine was back above ten points for the second time in three games, recording her 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Forjan and Martin both had ten apiece. Aichele led the Jays in rebounding with nine, while Martin hauled down seven.
E-town shot just 33 percent, including 3-for-18 from downtown. They did converted all their foul shots, going 4-for-4. Drew hit 23 of 51 shot attempts and connected on nine three-pointers. The Rangers were 10-for-17 at the charity stripe.
The women's basketball team will look to snap their two-game skid on Saturday, Jan. 17 when they travel to face Goucher at 5 p.m.
