ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team had Moravian on its heels in the first half of Saturday's Landmark Conference game at Thompson Gymnasium. E-town looked to be headed to its second straight win, but a 19-0 run in the latter portion of the first half sent the Greyhounds in front and the Jays couldn't dig themselves out of the hole, coming up short 75-69. The Blue Jays had three players in double figures.
An early three-pointer from Emily MacDonnell put Moravian (8-6, 4-2 Landmark) on the board first, but
Alyssa Aichele and
Emily Martin combined for the next six points to give the lead to Elizabethtown (9-3, 3-3 Landmark). Aichele canned a jumper on
Taylor Alwine's assist, followed by two layups by Martin, who grabbed an offensive rebound on each possession for the put-back basket.
The Blue Jays had the advantage extended to nine points with 8:40 left in the first half after Alwine found
Morgan Thomas for the two-point jumper. From that point, the Greyhounds took control of the game.
Over the next four and a half minutes, Moravian held E-town scoreless while putting up 19 straight points to take a ten-point lead, 34-24, with 3:54 remaining in the half.
Rachel Forjan ended the scoreless drought with a jumper.
Samantha Caliguiri converted an Elizabethtown turnover into two points with a little over a minute to go to make it 38-30. Forjan nailed a trey with four seconds to go before the buzzer sounded to send the teams into the break with the score 38-33, Moravian on top.
The Jays kept it close early on in the second half and eventually took the lead, 44-42, with 15:46 left to go on Thomas' layup. It did not last long, though.
The Greyhounds used another 7-0 run to regain the lead. Alesha Marcks hit four straight free throws (14-of-16 in the game).
Marissa Gingrich hit a three of her own to bring E-town within two, but Marcks gave Moravian another basket on the following possession. She had a game-high 30 points.
E-town was down nine with a little over nine minutes remaining in the contest before Forjan scored five straight points for EC (three-pointer, fast break layup) to cut the deficit to four.
Moravian continued clinging to its lead as the Jays threatened several times in the waning moments of the game. Martin snatched an offensive board off her own miss and got fouled. She sank the ensuing two foul shots, which gave her a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Martin also blocked four shots. Her two free throws made it 65-62.
Still down two possessions with less than a minute, Elizabethtown couldn't find the bottom of the net. Moravian sank five free throws in the last minute of play to help put the game away. As a team, the Greyhounds 25-for-30 at the foul line (83.3%). E-town was 6-of-12.
Forjan ended with a team-high 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting, including three treys. Martin's 14 rebounds were split evenly on both ends of the court, with seven coming on the defensive end as well as seven on the offensive glass. Aichele added ten points and seven boards.
Krissy Pennell had five steals.
The women's team will hit the road for a three-game road trip beginning on Wednesday, January 14 at Drew. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
