GRANTHAM, Pa. – Elizabethtown put in a valiant effort Tuesday night against No. 1 Messiah, before a thunderstorm forced the "Marshmallow Bowl" to be declared a no contest in the 58th minute. The teams will not make up the game, which needed to be restarted and played in its entirety according to NCAA rules.
The Blue Jays put forth one of their better showings against the highly touted, and two-time defending national champion, Falcons.
Brent Batory hit the post with a shot in the 42nd minute and the visitors nearly matched Messiah shot-for-shot, trailing 6-5 at the half.
Messiah pressured early and was finally rewarded in the 17th minute when Danny Brandt took a pass from Jack Thompson and knocked it past keeper
Justin Signora for a 1-0 lead. E-town settled in to outshoot the Falcons 5-1 over the remaineder of the half.
Scott Hess and
Andrew Sandridge had shots stopped by Brandon West in the 18th and 19th minutes, respectively.
In the 58th minute, threatening skies hit Grantham, forcing an hour delay. NCAA rules state that a game which hasn't reached 70 minutes is not official, thus prompting the no contest. All statistics accumulated in Tuesday's game do not count, as it was not official.
