Blue Jays make Wilkes work in 31-6 defeat

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Mike Lammer (157) and Zeke Zimmer (174) recorded victories Friday night, and other Elizabethtown wrestlers fought hard in a 31-6 defeat to Wilkes that was a lot closer than the final score indicated.

The Colonels (6-2) got off to a fast start behind ninth-ranked Guesseppe Rea's 10-1 major decision at 125 pounds and Michael Fleck's 6-0 shutout of Bryan Pflanz at 133. Pflanz held his own against Fleck, who is labeled as a contender in the weight class by D3wrestle.com, but was unable to counter with any point-scoring moves.

Pankil Chander (141) and Andrew Tonnesen (149) extended the visitor's lead to 12-0 after four bouts, though unsportsmanlike conduct from Chander docked the Colonels a point following the 141 match.

Mike Lammer got E-town on the board at 157 with a tough 4-3 win over Sean Lombardi. The Ephrata native led 2-1 after a period thanks to a takedown. Lombardi started down to begin the second period and quickly escaped, but a match-defining takedown by Lammer with 1:35 left proved to be the difference, even though the Wilkes senior would escape again before the period ended to cut Lammer's lead to one.

Coming off his 60th career win Saturday at the NYC/PA Duals, senior 174-pounder Zeke Zimmer added to that total with a 6-5 decision that needed riding time to crown the victor. Zimmer held one-point leads at the end of the first two segments, but a takedown right near the third period buzzer by James Ilvento tied the bout at five. Luckily for Zimmer, his 1:33 of riding time was enough to collect an extra point and the win.

That same circumstance would go against the Blue Jays (1-4) in the very next match when Luke Fernandez threw Levi Veppert to the mat in the closing seconds of their 184 tussle. Veppert used 1:27 of riding time to escape with a 4-3 win.

Wilkes pulled away in the upper weight classes with Eric Bach earning a fall at 197 and David Wilke winning by forfeit at 285.

In an exhibition match, E-town freshman Philip Torresani pinned Wilkes' Dustin Zuzulock at 6:53 of the third period. Torresani built a 15-5 lead before the pin on seven takedowns, including five in the first period.

Elizabethtown is back at Thompson Gymnasium for a meeting with No. 18 York (Pa.) Tuesday evening at 7:30.
