ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — After leading by just three points at halftime, the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, shooting over 50 percent in the second half to break open its non-conference game against Lancaster Bible at Thompson Gymnasium Thursday night.
Rachel Forjan dropped 19 points in the final 20 minutes to help the Blue Jays win the home opener over the Chargers, 74-54.
Sabrina Hackendorn and
Krissy Pennell also finished in double figures.
Lancaster Bible (1-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead on baskets by Aubrey Folger and Shanice Smith, but Elizabethtown (3-0) rattled off the next seven points of the game to take a 7-4 lead.
Emily Martin knocked home a jumper off an assist from Forjan to start the 7-0 run. Pennell hit her first of two treys and Martin followed that up with a layup off a Forjan steal.
Taylor Alwine provided the assist.
E-town never trailed after taking the lead, though the Chargers kept it close over the remainder of the first half. Hackendorn, who provided a lot of energy off the bench for the Jays, hauled down an offensive rebound and connected on the put-back to give EC its biggest lead of the half at nine points, 30-21, with 3:30 to go. Meaghan Williams and Kirsten Webster each hit a pair of free throws with less than a minute on the clock to shave the deficit to three points by half.
Folger got the Chargers within a point 30 seconds into the final period, but after that it was all Elizabethtown. Within a minute of Folger's made basket, E-town had the lead back up to nine as Forjan drilled two three-pointers (both assisted by
Alyssa Aichele) and Pennell found Martin on the fast break for an easy two.
Forjan was on fire, hitting seven of her ten second-half shots, including 5-of-7 from downtown. She also had two assists, one of which helped the Blue Jays establish their largest lead of the game as Hackendorn completed the and-one with 8:47 remaining in the game to make it 54-40. Forjan finished 9-of-19 from the floor for a game-high 25. She finished one trey (7-of-13) shy of tying the program record for made threes in a game.
The Jays did a lot of damage defensively, forcing 31 turnovers and turning them into 27 points. E-town also dominated the paint, outscoring the Chargers 32-18, and on the fast break (11-2). Hackendorn led all bench scorers with ten points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Emily Young added eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Pennell went for 13 points and five assists with a pair of steals.
Taylor Alwine, Martin, and
Alex Fernandez also recorded two steals each. Fernandez scored her first collegiate points with a layup toward the very end of the game.
The women's basketball team heads out on the road to face Juniata on December 3 for its first Landmark Conference game. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
