HUNTINGDON, Pa. — The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team got off to a blazing fast start in its 80-61 Landmark Conference victory at Juniata Wednesday night. The Blue Jays put up 52 points in the first half and cruised to their first-ever win as a member of the Landmark.
Alyssa Aichele and
Rachel Forjan each scored 13 points to lead E-town.
Elizabethtown (4-0, 1-0 Landmark) was scorching hot in the opening 20 minutes, shooting just a shade under 61 percent (20-for-33) for the half. They also hit three of six three-point attempts and went 9-for-12 at the foul line. Each starter had at least seven points by half's end.
It was tight early on, but it wouldn't take long for E-town to begin pulling away.
Taylor Alwine scored the Jays' first four points to get EC out in front 4-2. The two teams traded baskets before Aichele recorded seven straight points to put Elizabethtown ahead for good. She and
Emily Martin (four points) helped E-town on its 11-0 spurt to jump ahead 17-8.
Juniata (1-5, 0-1 Landmark) brought it back to a five-point deficit with 11:36 left in the first half on Bailey Swogger's trey, but the Blue Jays were too much.
Krissy Pennell made a layup and Forjan followed with an and-one to double the advantage back to ten points in 30 seconds of time.
Aichele added six of her 13 points in the second half.
Emily Young also had six second-half points for the Jays.
Despite the Eagles shooting a tad better percentage wise, Elizabethtown made up for it at the foul line, going 17-for-25 for the entire game. E-town also forced 21 turnovers and turned those into 26 points. The Jays outrebounded Juniata 42-29 and had a commanding advantage in the paint, scoring 44 points to JC's 24.
Alwine and Pennell each finished with 12 points, joining Aichele and Forjan in double figures. Martin and Young were both one basket shy of making it six players in double digits. Pennell added eight assists to set a new career-high.
Sabrina Hackendorn,
Nikki Thompson,
Erika Ferro,
Rachel Liszkiewicz, and
Hannah Bankes contributed 14 of the 22 bench points.
The women's basketball team will travel to face Haverford on Saturday, December 6 for a 12 p.m. tip-off.
