HAVERFORD, Pa. – Elizabethtown women's volleyball suffered a pair of sweeps to Haverford and Kean Saturday, but both were closer than the 3-0 finals indicated. The Blue Jays lost two of the three sets to Haverford by two points and were within four of Kean in the second and third sets.
The Blue Jays put up 10 blocks against Haverford (18-8) with freshman
Brittianni Phillips assisting on six to lead the team.
Kelci Scannapieco, who paced E-town (11-18) with nine kills in both matches Saturday, had four block assists, while
Taylor Beck and
Samantha Hicks added three each.
Meg O'Day (14 kills) and Keri Godbe (13) teamed up for 66% of Haverford's 41 kills. The Fords hit .210 (41-16-119) in the match, but failed to pull away in any of the three sets partly because of 12 service errors.
E-town was in every set, losing all three by four points or less: 25-23, 25-21, 25-23.
Megan McNaul chipped in with seven kills and 18 digs, while
Karley Ice collected four kills.
Kean (14-14) put the Jays in an early hole by handing them a nine-point defeat in the first set, 25-16, their largest margin of defeat on the day. Aysia Peterson came up with six of her team-high 13 kills in the first set, which the Cougars led by as many as 10 points.
An attacking error by KU's Joelle Tondi in the second had the Blue Jays primed to even the match, 18-12, but the Cougars replied with 11 consecutive points to seize control 23-18. A kill from McNaul and a solo block by Scannapieco put E-town back within 24-21, but a kill from Kean's Kassie Hernandez closed the set, 25-21.
Kean would win the third by the same score.
McNaul's six kills were second most on the team once again, with Hicks smashing five of her own.
Jen Cook and
Shannon Deck both reached double figures in digs with 13 and 10, respectively.
E-town begins the final week of the season with a non-conference match at Cabrini Tuesday at 7 p.m.
