ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Many opponents have tried to slow Elizabethtown senior
Kelci Scannapieco, but few have succeeded. Scannapieco made sure Albright would not join the short list Tuesday evening, registering 20 kills and a .533 hitting percentage to lead the Blue Jays to a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-19) sweep in their annual Dig Pink match at Thompson Gymnasium.
Scannapieco was the catalyst for the offense. She attacked for six kills in the opening set and 10 more in the second, before being eased out of the match with Elizabethtown in complete control of the third. The York native and Eastern York grad collected her fourth match of 20-plus kills this season and remains very much on pace to shatter personal career records.
Following Tuesday's dominating effort, Scannapieco is just seven kills shy of 300 for the season and 157 away from 1,000 in just three years at the College. While 1k would require a massive output —nearly 20 kills per match over the team's final eight regular season contests— a few postseason matches would help. The Blue Jays (9-15), who have struggled at times, still possess an outside chance at a Landmark Conference postseason berth, but need wins Saturday when they host Goucher and Catholic in a crossover.
Scannapieco is also averaging 3.33 kills per set, well above her 2.59 career rate.
But, as much as the senior makes the offense go, beating Albright was about many Blue Jays playing at a high level, not just one.
Freshman
Morgan Reiss, playing in only her seventh match of the season, came off the bench to drill seven kills on the Lions' (7-16) defense without an error (7-0-9, .778) and picked up a pair of service aces. Classmate
Brittianni Phillips hit .429 with eight kills (8-2-14) and the trio of
Megan McNaul (five),
Taylor Beck (four) and
Samantha Hicks (four) combined for 13 more kills.
Elizabethtown finished with its second best hitting night this season, connecting at a .269 clip (50-18-119), and its 50 kills were a three-set high.
Steph High led the Jays with 28 assists, while
Brynne Kirsch had 16.
Jen Cook was tied with Albright's Caitlin Klotzbach for the match-high in digs with 20, and McNaul added 13.
Kellie Hill was Albright's top threat on the offensive side of the ball with seven kills, but was the only visiting player with more than five.
The Blue Jays face must-win matches Saturday on their home floor beginning at 11 a.m. with Goucher. They'll conclude conference play with another Homecoming match against Catholic at 6:30 p.m.
