ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team were shut out by Muhlenberg Wednesday night at Hoover Field.
In the opening minutes, Elizabethtown was close to putting Muhlenberg down a goal as
Kirsten Navich fed a ball through the middle of the defense, but it was just a touch out of reach for
Linnet Laiser. A few minutes later, Navich cut back on her left and fired a shot at goal only to be saved by goalie Megan Stairs.
The Blue Jays had much better of the play in the first half, but weren't able to punch through. The Mules, on the other hand, scored on their first shot of the game in the 25th minute as Reilly Sullivan found the top right corner of the net to make it 1-0.
Etown was close on
Chayse Flood's attempt in the 29th minute. Competing with a defender near goal, Flood was able to stick with the ball and win a 50-50 ball, turn toward goal and hammer a shot that Stairs was able to get hands on to keep it out.
Muhlenberg led 1-0 at the half.
Meghan McGonagle had a couple chances in the second half off the left wing as she was able to drive centrally and get attempts on frame. In the 58th minute, she got by a defender and got the ball on her left foot for a shot. Stairs, again, made one of her five saves on the play.
Minutes later, the sophomore winger was at the back post on
Bridget Ferrarese's corner. The ball sailed toward the back post and dropped in where McGonagle had a touch at goal and in a pile off attackers and defenders, Stairs made another save the Mules cleared the ball.
Muhlenberg was able to hold off the Jays late in the game and won 1-0.
Elizabethtown will host Wilkes on Saturday, September 26, at 4 p.m. to open Landmark Conference play.
