ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team was handed a 1-0 loss by Wilkes on a rainy and windy Saturday afternoon at Hoover Field in the Landmark opener for both schools.
Wilkes scored on a set piece in the 19th minute with a driven ball from the left wing that met Jess Shea's head in the middle of the box for the goal.
Elizabethtown came back in the 20th and 21st minutes with golden chances at tying the game.
Linnet Laiser toe poked the ball amongst a crowd around goalie Delaney Yaracs. Shortly thereafter, a ball came across the top of the box and onto
Sophie Shadle's right foot. She curled a ball toward the far post, only to see Yaracs make a diving finger tip save to keep it out.
Those were the Jays best chances of the first half as the Colonels led 1-0 at halftime.
Sky Shinnen nearly tied the game in the 73rd minute as she was able to spin off a defender in the box and drive at goal. Her right-footed effort slammed off the post and back into the play as the game went on still a one-goal advantage for Wilkes.
Chayse Flood had one final attempt on goal in the 87th minute, which was saved by Yaracs. A corner found the head of
Alyssa Golombeck in the 89th minute, but it was a tad too tall for the sophomore to be able to direct it on goal.
Elizabethtown will travel to McDaniel on Wednesday, September 30, at 4 p.m.
