ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman
Linnet Laiser stuck with the play and scored the game's only goal as the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team shut out Stevenson at Jane Hoover Field on Saturday.
The Blue Jays struck early, in the first 10 minutes, off a corner.
Bridget Ferrarese delivered a ball toward the far post. The ball came to
Kirsten Navich, who fired a shot on goal that saved, but not corraled. Laiser was by the near post and pounced on the loose ball and was able to get the ball across the line with a few defenders plus the goalie all going after the ball.
Elizabethtown limited the Mustangs' attack and led 1-0 at the half.
The reigning Defensive Athlete of the Week,
Ella Smith, made a key save in the 80th minute after a through ball put in Saleigha Fennel on the right side of the box. The sophomore was one-on-one with Smith and her shot went right to the junior keeper, who was positioned perfectly to make the stop.
The Jays were able to run out the clock and earn a clean sheet in their first home contest.
Etown plays at Gettysburg on Wednesday, September 16, at 4 p.m.
