LANCASTER, Pa. -- Freshman Linnet Laiser scored her first career goal for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team as the Blue Jays came back in the second half to tie at Franklin & Marshall in the season opener on Tuesday.
Etown's defense was able to hold off the Diplomats for the first 51 minutes of the game when the hosts were able to break through and take a 1-0 lead. Franklin & Marshall had the better of possession throughout the game, but the Jays capitalized on Sky Shinnen's hustle along the left sideline and turned it into the game-tying goal from Laiser in the 69th minute.
Shinnen sprinted to save the ball from going out and went at her defender, eventually getting to the end line and sent a cross from the left side that found Meghan McGonagle open on the right side of the goal. McGonagle passed it off to Laiser, who fired it high and past the goalkeeper to make the score 1-1.
Despite being outshot, goalkeeper Ella Smith had a career-high 15 saves in goal for the Blue Jays. Smith came up with crucial saves at the end of both halves to keep the game tied.
Elizabethtown will play at Lebanon Valley on Sunday, September 6, at 1 p.m.
