ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Sophomore
Izzy Akelaitis picked a good time for her first career home run on Monday in the Elizabethtown College softball team's split with Lebanon Valley at The Nest. Akelaitis' homer was the game-winning run in game one as the Blue Jays took the opener before the Dutchmen won game two, 1-0.
GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 7, LEBANON VALLEY 6
The Blue Jays were cruising in game one after getting out to a 6-0 lead through four innings. Elizabethtown posted a run in the first, second, and fourth innings with a three-run third tucked in between.
Maddie Reever singled in
Hannah Long in the first to make it 1-0. Akelaitis grounded out to second but was able to score
Sarah Birner on the play. In the third, Reever hit an RBI double,
Jess Dunn singled up the middle to score Reever and Birner hit an RBI single to center to score Dunn.
Brooke Huczko made it 6-0 in the fourth with her RBI double to center field.
The Jays hit a road bump in the sixth after LVC got a run back in the fifth. The Dutchmen rallied for five runs to tie the game at 6-6.
Akelaitis took a 2-0 pitch and launched it over the left field fence with one out to break the tie and give EC a one-run lead.
Julia Bergen replaced
Mikaela Benner in the seventh and earned the save, but not until
Hannah Long caught the final out of the game with an outstretched glove in left field with the game-tying run at second. Benner earned her second win of the season.
GAME 2: LEBANON VALLEY 1, ELIZABETHTOWN 0
The bats were quiet in game two as Lebanon Valley scored the lone run of the game in the third on an RBI single to center.
Bergen started and threw a complete game, only allowing six hits and the one earned run, but the offense couldn't provide run support as the Blue Jays managed just five hits off Miley Beachel.
Elizabethtown left at least one runner on base in each of the final six innings, unable to produce a game-tying or winning run along the way.
Emily Bittner had two of the five hits in game two. Huczko, Reever and Dunn had the other hits for Etown.
The Blue Jays play at Muhlenberg, recently added to the schedule, on Thursday, April 9, at 3 and 5 p.m.
