Harper's gem lifts softball to split with Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Junior Sydney Harper pitched a complete-game gem in game two for the Elizabethtown College softball team as they sent Catholic to their first shutout of the season to split with the Cardinals on Wednesday at The Nest. Harper improved to 3-0 with the win.

GAME 1: CATHOLIC 7, ELIZABETHTOWN 5
Catholic showed off their bats in the first game, hammering three home runs as they led the entire way, but Elizabethtown made it interesting later on.

The Cardinals took an early 1-0 lead, but Sarah Birner tied it up in the second with an RBI single to right. Two Catholic homers made it 4-1 and another RBI double pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fourth.

The Jays got a run back with Jess Dunn's RBI double to left center to score Birner.

Catholic led 7-2 after their half of the sixth before Etown added three to get within two.

Lily Baldwin singled to right to drive in a pair of runs as Lexi O'Brien and Dana Delamater scored. Emily Bittner had an RBI ground out to make it a two-run game as Hannah Long scored on the play.

Morgan O'Sullivan closed out the seventh to give the Cardinals the game one win.

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 2, CATHOLIC 0
While Catholic pounded out 18 hits in game one, it was not the same at all in game two as Harper shut down the Cardinals' high powered offense.

She allowed just three hits over seven innings, striking out three and getting some solid defensive play from both her infield and outfield. Sarah Birner made several nice defensive stops at second to get the outs to Maddie Reever at first. Hannah Long made a diving catch in left, Lexi O'Brien and Brooke Huczko each had running catches later in game two in right center.

Etown got on the board in the first after Hannah Long reached on an errant throw and scampered all the way to third base. Lily Baldwin drove a ball into center field to score Long from third to make it 1-0 right away.

The Jays got another sac fly, this time from Reever in the third, as Baldwin scored on the play and EC led by two.

Harper retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Catholic's lead off singled to start the seventh, but Harper received those defensive plays from all three outfielders, right, center, and left, to end the threat and the game as the Cardinals suffered their first shutout defeat of the season.

Baldwin and Huczko each had two hits apiece in game two.

The Blue Jays play at Susquehanna on Saturday, April 18.
