CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Senior
Ganon Smith became a two-time all-american for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team on Friday at the NCAA Div. III Wrestling Championships hosted at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse. Smith won both of his Friday matches to stay unbeaten while
Justice Hockenberry also won twice in his NCAA debut.
Hockenberry won his opening pigtail match with a 9-5 decision over Stevens' Tyler Roe. That win put him up against the top seed at 165, Luther's Clayton McDonough. Hockenberry would drop the match and forced into wrestlebacks, beginning with Castleton's Jashon Holmes.
Hockenberry kept his NCAA appearance alive with another decision, this time a commanding 10-3. That put him up against the ranked ninth-seed, Coe's Bo Koedam. Hockenberry bowed out of the tournament with a loss to Koedam to finish 2-2.
Smith had the morning to wait for the pigtail winner of Caden Stout (Coast Guard) and Zane Pannell (Dubuque). It would be Stout that would face Smith, the number one seed in the 184 bracket. As he has done all season, Smith won via fall at 2:31 to move to 38-0 with his 30th pin of the year to advance to the quarterfinals later in the day.
He would face a familiar opponent, SUNY Oneonta's Jack Ryan, whom he faced several times in last year's NCAA Championships. It was 0-0 and then 1-1 and that's how it ended after three periods, calling for sudden victory with an all-america spot on the line.
Smith was able to get Ryan and eventually was given the takedown for the 4-1 SV to become a two-time all-american for the Blue Jays, the first since Tyler Erdman in 2009 and 2010.
Smith will wrestle Robert Flege of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the semifinal round in the Saturday morning session.
