ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team played its first home game on the newly installed turf at Herr Field Wednesday night. The Blue Jays blanked Juniata 1-0 on
Meghan McGonagle's first-half goal.
A misplaced goal kick in the second minute went straight to Elizabethtown and they capitalized on the mistake.
Sophia Hogan got the ball over the McGonagle, just a bit inside the top left corner of the box. She took a touch to set herself up and curled a ball around the keeper to make it 1-0 exactly two minutes into the game.
From there, the Blue Jays had a few shots on frame that goalie Emma Stiller saved. Meanwhile,
Ella Smith wasn't tested all that much throughout. Smith actually finished with four saves to Stiller's three, but those attempts did not necessarily challenge the junior keeper for Etown.
The Jays were close to making it two goals in the first five minutes. Stiller had come out to get a ball, but Elizabethtown had gotten to it first, leaving her scrambling back toward net.
Sophie Shadle tried to take advantage of that situation, but two defenders for the Eagles were covering the ball and cleared Shadle's shot away.
Sara Bean and
Alyssa Golombeck had chances off corners just a little wide of the goal. McGonagle tried for her second of the night in the 65th minute and just missed the outside of the left post.
The Blue Jays will host Scranton on Saturday, October 10, at 4:30 p.m. for Homecoming.
