ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman
Chayse Flood scored her first career goal in the second half, but the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team came up short against Scranton Saturday at Homecoming on Ira R. Herr Field. The Royals beat the Blue Jays, 2-1.
A set piece went off the Etown defense and into the net for Scranton's first goal in the 23rd minute. The Blue Jays nearly responded a minute later as
Meghan McGonagle outraced a defender, got around the goalie, and touched ball toward the back post. It glanced off the post and stayed out.
In the 31st minute,
Ella Fasnacht blocked a shot by Elise Nicholas that otherwise would have tucked inside the far post if not for the junior's intervention.
The Royals maintained their 1-0 lead into halftime.
Faith Sullivan made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute, but the Jays battled back and eventually got a goal back.
In the 74th minute, McGonagle crossed the ball from the left to the right side into the path of a streaking Flood. The first-year winger drove at goal and laced a shot upper center that avoided the glove of Scranton goalie Makenzie Van Arnsdale, the first goal she's conceded in three-plus games.
Jays' goalie
Ella Smith made another key save in the 78th minute, alertly getting to her near post as Sullivan was inches from tapping in her second goal of the evening. Smith dove for the ball and kept it out to keep it 2-1.
After
Sky Shinnen's attempt on goal in the 77th minute, the Royals held the Jays without a shot.
Elizabethtown will be on the road at Catholic on Wednesday, October 14, at 7 p.m.
