SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- Sophomore
Alyssa Golombeck's first career goal was a crucial one as the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team left Sassafras Field Saturday evening with a 1-0 shutout victory over the River Hawks in Landmark Conference action.
Golombeck worked her way into the starting lineup and has been a consistent starter for Elizabethtown over the last eight games.
She delivered what ended up being the game's only goal in the first half off a set piece for the Blue Jays.
Minutes after one of
Ella Smith's five saves in the game, Etown earned a corner in the 22nd minute.
Bridget Ferrarese, the Jays' primary set piece taker, sent the ball into the box where Golombeck was able to put it home for the goal and give EC the one-goal lead.
The River Hawks outshot Elizabethtown 6-2 in the first half, but all three shots on goal that Smith faced were stopped by the junior.
Smith saved a pair of shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to keep the Jays in front. After the 53rd minute, Etown did well to keep any dangerous chances on target at bay as the Blue Jays saw out the clock and earned pivotal road points.
Elizabethtown hosts Juniata on Wednesday, October 7, at 7 p.m.
