ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Junior
Caba Alvarez blasted home a goal in the second half, but the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team saw Catholic respond as the Blue Jays and Cardinals finished in a 1-1 draw at Herr Field Wednesday night.
A minute and a half after one of
Logan Sumner's four saves in the game,
Owen Auchenbach came back and was inches from putting Elizabethtown in front in the ninth minute. The junior's shot from outside the box clipped off the right post and stayed out.
Catholic's best chance of the first half came in the 41st minute as Hamin Oladokun beat Sumner to the ball in the box and his ball slipped past the sophomore goalie. It looked like it was ready to roll into the net but
Niko Houck hustled over from his left back position to clear the ball away from goal to keep it 0-0.
Jason Stark had an early chance in the second half go just wide of the goal in the 57th minute.
Gui Yamamoto lifted a free kick toward the back post that the junior forward rose above the defender to get a head on it, but couldn't steer it on frame.
The Blue Jays were fortunate to see Seth Michalak's attempt buzz just right of the post in the 61st minute. Michalak found himself unmarked in the box and rushed his shot as he pushed it wide.
Etown broke through in the 67th minute thanks to Alvarez.
Logan Gisondi touched a ball back to
Drew Stark, who slid a square ball to
Manny Velazquez and he sent a ball into the path of the oncoming No. 11 in white. Alvarez raced into the box and blistered a shot past goalie Owen Allegro and into the net to put the Jays ahead. It was the first goal Catholic had given up since September 23.
The Cardinals got even less than 10 minutes later on a set piece goal. Graham Leary got a flick on the ball on Christian Backich's corner in the 75th minute to level the match at 1-1.
Auchenbach was so close to putting Elizabethtown back into the lead in the 89th minute when his shot hit the left post, the second post of the night. That came off
Carlos Salazar's corner.
That was the final shot of the night as the clock hit zeroes.
Elizabethtown will play at Lycoming on Saturday, October 17, at 1 p.m.
