Men's soccer routs Penn State Berks in home opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- In a game dominated by the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team, the Blue Jays won their home opener at Ira R. Herr Field Wednesday night in non-conference action, 5-0, over Penn State Berks. Jason Stark netted a brace for the Jays while Caba Alvarez, Gui Yamamoto, and Will Withall also scored. Pedro Miranda and Sam Frey combined on the clean sheet.

Elizabethtown peppered the Lions' goal all game, ending with a 35-3 advantage in shots.

Alvarez started the scoring with a spectacular goal in the third minute, rising off the ground for a side volley from Dan Dein's service along the right touch line. 10 minutes later, after a collision in the box awarding the Blue Jays a penalty kick, Yamamoto converted from the spot to make it 2-0.

Later in the first half, Colin Norton was able to get to the touch line and curl in a ball that met the head of Stark. He flicked on a header that beat the goalie far post to make it 3-0 for Etown heading into the half.

The shots kept coming as EC tallied 21 in the second half to just one for Berks. 18 of the Jays' 35 shots were credited on target.

In the final five minutes, the Blue Jays struck twice. First was Stark, coming up with the ball off a deflected shot from out near the top of the box. He swung on the bouncing ball with his left and drove it into the net to make it 4-0, his second of the night. With 35 seconds to go, Evan Berlinski's through ball sent Withall in on goal and he was able to record his first collegiate goal to close out the high-scoring night for Elizabethtown.

Miranda was only needed for one save over 72 minutes. Frey did not record a stop. Josh Martin had 13 for the Lions.

Elizabethtown plays at Immaculata on Saturday, September 6, at 6 p.m.
