Wilkes beats field hockey in Landmark opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team led Saturday's Landmark Conference opener at Wolf Field statistically, except for one category and that was the final score as the Colonels beat the Blue Jays 2-1.

Elizabethtown saw plenty of the ball and had numerous opportunities to get ahead in the first quarter, outshooting the Colonels 8-2 over the first 15 minutes and recording nine penalty corners. The unfortunate part was not coming away with anything to show for it.

Then, in the second quarter, Wilkes was able to nab the game's first goal with 34 seconds left before halftime as Georgia Baskett deflected in a cross to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Near the end of the third quarter, the Jays finally got on the board as the offensive pressure paid off. Drew Bridges sent a ball across goal that was touched on by Mia Fino and finished off by Hannah Long to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the fourth.

With under seven minutes left in regulation, Wilkes scored a similar goal as Maddie Karp was endline and crossed far post where Taylor Minick knocked the ball in to restore the lead for the Colonels.

The Blue Jays had six more corners in the fourth quarter, 19 total in the game, but couldn't get a ball past Chloe Gilroy, who finished the day with 16 saves.

Elizabethtown will host Alvernia on Tuesday, September 30, at 7 p.m.
