Ferrarese, Mumford provide goals as women's soccer earns first home win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team snapped its streak of four consecutive ties with the first home win on Herr this season after a 3-1 victory over DeSales on Wednesday. Bridget Ferrarese scored her first career goal while Skylar Mumford tacked on her team-leading third goal in the win.

Elizabethtown's starting forwards, Sophia Hogan and Mumford, each had shot attempts on goal over the first 19 minutes of action, but both were saved by DeSales goalie Campbell Pacheco.

Nearing halftime, Ferrarese had the ball on the left side near the 18-yard box. Taking her defender one-on-one, the first-year player was able to get the ball on her strong side and launched a curling effort that sailed into the upper right netting to put the Jays ahead 1-0 heading into halftime.

The Bulldogs came out strong and put Etown on its heels to begin the second half. That pressure would eventually turn into a game-tying goal as Madison O'Connor and Rebecca Bury set up Emily Mulroony for a goal in the 58th minute to make it 1-1.

The Blue Jays would be the beneficiaries of an own goal in the 70th minute as Mumford played a cross from the right endline back across goal. The defender couldn't get her body turned and the ball ricocheted in off of her to gift Elizabethtown a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes left to play.

Mumford would get her goal in the final five minutes as she picked up the ball near midfield and got in on goal. She pushed a shot past Pacheco and into the open net to seal the deal for the Jays.

Ella Smith, the reigning Defensive Athlete of the Week, made four saves in the game.

Elizabethtown opens Landmark play on Saturday, September 27, at Wilkes with a 1 p.m. kickoff scheduled.
