ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A number of scoring opportunities presented themselves to the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team Wednesday night against Hood, but the Blazers were the ones to escape with a 1-0 win at Ira R. Herr Field.
Chances were fewer in the first half on a rain-soaked grassy field with Elizabethtown leading in shots, 6-3, at the half.
Connor Kirchner and
Quinn Erb had shots on target saved by goalie Adam Labows.
Hood grabbed the lead early in the second half as Cristian Topovich's cross met the head of Terrell Funchess near the back post.
The Blazers looked to go up 2-0 later in the half as bodies collided in Etown's box and the referee awarding a penalty kick to Hood. Zeth Zambrano tried to go inside the right post, but
Pedro Miranda was able to get there and make the save to keep it at 1-0.
A little over six minutes later, the Blue Jays had their own PK opportunity after a shot struck an arm in an unnatural position in the box. EC wasn't able to convert to tie the game.Â
Declan Casey's header his the left post in the final seven minutes of play off a Jays' set piece from the right sideline. A follow-up attempt was put out wide as the Blazers were able to run out the clock.
Elizabethtown starts off conference play Saturday at Wilkes at 3:30 p.m.
