READING, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team held off a second-half surge by Alvernia on Saturday night in the 13th annual Kicks for Cancer game.
Dan Dein scored his first career goal while
Gui Yamamoto and
Jude Ashley also supplied goals for the Blue Jays in their 3-2 win.
In the 12th minute, Dein had a throw-in deep in the Golden Wolves' end. His throw sailed into the box and the goalie came off his line to come and punch it out. The ball came back into the area where Dein was and he stepped up and lobbed the ball back into the box. The keeper didn't get a good read on the trajectory of the ball as it dropped into the far side of the goal to make it 1-0 for the Jays. It was the first goal in Dein's career.
Minutes later,
Caba Alvarez was tripped up in the box and Elizabethtown was awarded a penalty kick for the foul. Yamamoto, taking his third PK of the season for Etown, got the goalie going the wrong way and scored easily in the 18th minute to make it 2-0 in quick succession for EC.
Ashley netted his first goal of the season in the 65th minute to give the Jays a commanding 3-0 lead going well into the second half.
Alvernia pushed and made the Etown defense work. They outshot the Jays 14-2 over the final 45 minutes.
The Wolves got two goals back over the final six minutes of the contest, their second in the 89th minute, but did not have a shot on target after that.
Pedro Miranda made five saves in the game, three in the second half, to earn the win.
Elizabethtown will host Hood on Wednesday, September 24, at 7:30 p.m.
