Tessier nets first career goal, Penn State Berks draws with women's soccer on late PK

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman Grace Tessier's first career goal for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team was wiped out late in the second half as Penn State Berks used a penalty kick to get a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field.

The Lions were nearly ahead in the second minute as Paige Thomas played a ball from the wing into the box and clanked off the top of the crossbar and dropped into play. Fortunately, the Blue Jays were able to clear away the ball as no harm was done.

Skylar Mumford poked a ball toward goal after it had dropped on an Elizabethtown corner kick in the 22nd minute. The goalie was out of position, but a defender was still on the line and able to get the ball out of the box before the senior's ball could cross.

Near the end of the first half, Jenna Hoffmann sent a hard-hit ball up to Tessier. She was able to turn and score left side netting for the first of her career to make it 1-0 in the 38th minute.

The Blue Jays, who led in shots at halftime, were up 1-0 through 45 minutes.

Sophia Gonzalez saved a handful of shots for the Lions in the second half to keep her team within a goal. Etown defended well, but one tough situation arose in the 80th minute as a shot struck an arm in the 18, forcing the referee to award the penalty to Berks. Faith Wavershak converted and tied the game up at 1-1.

Meghan McGonagle had EC's last attempt on goal, in the 83rd minute. Gonzalez was able to get to her right and make the save.

Ella Smith made a save in each half for the Jays.

Elizabethtown will host DeSales on Wednesday, September 24, at 5 p.m.
