YORK, Pa.—The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team opened up their season taking a short trip over to York (Pa.) for a tri-match. The Blue Jays defeated the Spartans, 3-1 before sweeping Penn St.-Mont Alto.
GAME 1: ELIZABETHTOWN 3, YORK 1 (30-28, 23-25, 25-12, 25-12)
Angela Ouitmet tallied a career-high 38 assists while
Lucy Stern grabbed a career-high 27 digs.
Lucy Stanek recorded a double-double of 19 kills and 12 digs.
Emma Rizzutto tallied 14 digs and
Alexa Adamek totaled four block assists.
Elizabethtown was off to a slow start to begin set one before pulling ahead 9-3. After trading points, York took a 19-15 lead. The Spartans grabbed set-point leading 24-19 before the Blue Jays came back with six straight points.
Kate Barbon, Stanek, and
Bailey McFeaters put down kills on the run. The two teams would trade points again before Etown came out with the 30-28 win to start the season. York went on to tie up the match 1-1 after winning set two, 25-23.
After dropping the previous set, Etown came out swinging in the third as they jumped out to a 15-5 lead. Several errors by the Spartans then put the Jays up 19-7. Kills from Barbon and an ace from
Claire Erdman gave Etown the big 25-12 win. To start set four the Blue Jays were out in front to start again. Two
Ida Fisher kills sandwiched a Spartan attack error bringing the score to 9-3. The Blue Jays rattled off six straight to lead 16-5. The teams went back-n-forth for a bit before Barbon and Fisher put down kills extending their lead. A York service error ended the match giving Etown the 25-12 win.
GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 3, PSU-MONT ALTO 0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-23)
Stanek recorded a career-high 25 kills and was just one dig shy of another double-double with nine. Ouimet tallied 36 assists while Stern totaled 17 digs.
The Blue Jays started set one strong against the Lions as they came with a 9-3 lead. Etown put up five in a row extending their lead to 14-3. Adamek downed a kill before Mont Alto rattled off ten straight coming within just one of the Jays. Through the end of the set the two teams traded points but Etown came out on top, 25-19.
Set two was a bit tighter to start but Stanek helped double the lead 8-4 with three aces. The Lions then grabbed an 11-10 lead mid-set before Etown pulled ahead again. Kills from Stanek and McFeaters brought the Blue Jays out, 17-13. Etown ended the set on a 3-1 run with help from McFeaters, Ouimet, and Stanek to win, 25-21.
The start of set three saw some back-n-forth before Mont Alto led 8-5. The Blue Jays tallied six in a row to lead by two points. After a 4-1 run, Mont Alto was back on top, 15-14. The teams traded points again before a Stanek kill and an ace by Ouimet sealed the match, 25-23.
The Blue Jays take another short trip over to Lancaster Bible on September 2 at 7:00 pm.
