ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team began its season with a 3-1 opening day win at Muhlenberg on Friday.
Skylar Mumford netted a pair of goals while
Ashley Rosati scored the first of her career.
Ella Smith made five saves in goal for her first career win.
Elizabethtown (1-0) was out to a strong start, controlling more of the ball around the field, though it did not turn into any first-half goals for the Jays.
Meghan McGonagle had Etown's first scoring chance when her shot was saved in the eighth minute. Sophia Shadle drove a ball from the right wing that met the foot of the freshman on the far side.
Later in the first half,
Olivia Herbert knocked a set piece ball from near midfield into the middle of the box.
Jenna Hoffmann rose above to get her head to it and directed it on goal, but goalie Dani Klingener made the stop. Shadle cut back to her left foot a few minutes later and fizzed a shot that didn't miss the far post by much.
Muhlenberg came on strong over the final 20 minutes and wound up outshooting Elizabethtown 9-4 by halftime. Smith made a sprawling one-handed save after a turnover in the box led to a close-range shot that the sophomore goalie turned away. Smith had to make another diving one-handed save in the final minutes of the half to keep it scoreless. Her save forced a corner, and on that ensuing corner, she was off her line to come and punch the ball out of harm's way.
The start of the second half mirrored the first for the Blue Jays as they were able to pin the Mules back into their half of the field. Hoffmann nearly had the game's first goal in the 49th minute and McGonagle followed seven minutes later, launching a left-footed effort at goal, only to be stopped Klingener.
Elizabethtown's pressure would eventually pay off.
Molly Kleinert's corner found Hoffmann's head around the six and her header popped back off the crossbar and the senior went for another header that seemed goal bound, but Klingener was able to keep it out.
Then, in the following minute,
Kayla Myer poked a loose ball back to
Sophia Hogan and her first-time through ball put Rosati in on goal and the senior capped off the play with the first of her career that put EC in front, 1-0 in the 72nd minute.
Then, in the 81st minute, Hoffmann played a ball out wide to McGonagle near the left corner. Her cross sailed in the path of
Skylar Mumford, who charged the ball and got a boot to direct it into the right side of the goal to make it 2-0.
Muhlenberg was able to get a goal back to make the final minutes interesting, but Mumford and Co. had other plans. The senior collected a ball and was able to beat her defender to the right. She whipped in a shot from outside the 18 that curled into the left side net to ice the game for the Jays in the 87th minute.
Etown outshot the Mules 12-1 in the second half and scored their three goals in a 15-minute span as they beat Muhlenberg to open the season for the second straight season.
The Jays will play at Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday, September 2, at 7 p.m.
