CHESTER, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team had leads late in both games on Thursday against Widener, but comebacks in each led the Pride to a sweep of the Blue Jays.
WIDENER 12, ELIZABETHTOWN 11
The Blue Jays built up a sturdy lead thanks to RBIs from six different players, including three for
Nicole Cecconi and
Kristen Aydelotte.
Widener used big fifth and sixth innings to get back into the game and ultimately take the lead before shutting down the Jays in the seventh.
Hannah Long,
Skye Zolomij,
Brooke Huczko, Cecconi, and Aydelotte all had multi-hit games in the opener of the doubleheader. Huczko was 3-for-4 to lead EC.
WIDENER 13, ELIZABETHTOWN 12 (F/8)
Elizabethtown needed some seventh-inning heroics to force extras as
Sarah Birner and
Cassidy Blaskopf came through for the team. Birner reached on an error as
Jess Dunn scored to get Etown within two, 7-5. Then, Blaskopf scored two with a game-tying double, her second and third RBIs of the game.
In the eighth, Long was placed on second and then stole third before scoring on a wild pitch to give the Blue Jays the lead. Birner hit a sac fly to center to score Dunn to put it at a two-run lead. Zolomij triple to score
Izzy Akelaitis and then
Maddie Reever hit her first career home run, a two-run shot, to make it 12-7.
The Pride answered in the bottom half with a run better to walk it off and complete the sweep.
Elizabethtown will host Senior Day on Saturday, April 19, prior to their conference doubleheader with Susquehanna.
