ASHLAND, Va. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team used a big second half to blow open Friday night's NCAA Div. III First Round game against SUNY Brockport to advance to Saturday's Second Round game at Randolph-Macon.
Summer McNulty had a game-high 22 points while
DaniRae Renno notched a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Elizabethtown was hot from the floor to start the game, hitting 10-of-15 shots in the first quarter, but only led by seven after turnovers gave SUNY Brockport extra possessions.
The Golden Eagles won the second quarter scoring battle 22-20 and trailed by five at halftime, 41-36.Â
The Blue Jays used Renno's size advantage to begin the third. Etown diced up Brockport's press and
Makenna Mummert got inside on two consecutive trips down the court and dished to Renno for the buckets down low. Mummert had a career-high eight assists in the game.
EC won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Golden Eagles 46-30 in the game and 18-6 in the third quarter as they took hold of the game. The Jays hit 12-of-15 third-quarter shots and wound up hitting a season-best 60 percent from the field for the game.
Elizabethtown was also on fire from beyond the arc, nailing 7-of-10 three-point attempts.
Cyleigh Wilson drained three in the second half and had four in the game as the Blue Jays were 10-for-21 from deep. Wilson, McNulty,
Lindsay Boyd, and
Ella Gordon all hit treys in the game.
Defensively, Etown limited SUNY Brockport, the third-best scoring offense in the country to under 70 points, only the fourth time this season the Golden Eagles have failed to reach 70. The Jays also held top scorer Stephanie Jean-Baptiste (17.9ppg) to single digits, just the fourth time all year she hasn't touched double figures.
Elizabethtown was able to control the glass, 45-26, and held the second chance advantage, 17-9.
Nine different players registered assists, part of the team's 26 that was the second-most for the Jays this season. Along with Mummert's eight, Gordon and Boyd had four,
Grace O'Connor dished out three,
Allyia Kennedy had two, and King and McNulty each had one.
The Blue Jays face the winner of the Randolph-Macon/Piedmont game. Friday's winners play Saturday night at 7:15 p.m.
