#12 Stevenson mounts fourth-quarter comeback to better Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team took a lead into the fourth quarter, but saw No. 12 Stevenson storm back over the final 15 minutes to overtake the Blue Jays and win by one, 13-12, at Wolf Field Wednesday night. Tristan Coleman had a game-high four goals for Etown.

Reese Levinson scored early for Elizabethtown to put them up 1-0. The Mustangs would score twice to take a 2-1 lead entering the second.

The Blue Jays would win the second quarter 3-2 on goals from Jay Rodriguez (2) and Jake Woodworth. Down 4-2 and looking for some offensive momentum, Woodworth provided it in a man-up situation. Nolan Krasnick fed Woodworth in the slot and on the quick turn, the sophomore ripped a shot that beat goalie Tyler Merchant to make it 4-3 with 7:24 left in the half. Rodriguez's second of the quarter came with 2:37 remaining on a dish from Coleman.

Elizabethtown and Stevenson were tied 4-4 at the break.

The third quarter was all Jays, including 6-0 on face offs. Graham Temple won 17 on the night for Etown and started off the quarter with one and immediately went down the field, passed to Finn Kristan, who scored seven seconds into the third to give Etown the lead at 5-4. Not long after, Rodriguez beat a defender and sprinted toward goal, drew another, and fed a ball across goal to Coleman waiting at the far post for the easy goal. Kristan scored again, this time a man-up, to make it 7-4 as the Blue Jays were rolling.

The momentum continued to build as Lucca Scomillio and Coleman scored 1:10 apart to make it 9-4 for EC. Stevenson was able to end their scoreless drought with one second remaining on the third-quarter clock.

Rodriguez set up Coleman for his hat trick a little over a minute into the fourth. Shortly after and thanks to a defensive stop, Brayden Franey had the ball on a clear and with the call from the sideline, launched a shot from three-quarters' field and into the open goal to make it 11-5 Blue Jays with 12:34 left in regulation.

From there, the Mustangs took control and utilize some sloppiness from the Jays to gain some extra possessions and cash in. Stevenson scored seven seconds after Franey's goal to get that one back. Methodically, the visitors recorded a goal at a time and with 3:14 to go, had tied it at 11-11.

The Mustangs took advantage of some late penalty time to go up by two goals. Coleman managed to get inside and score his fourth with 1:19 remaining, but Stevenson was able to win the next face off and run out the clock to complete the comeback victory and avoid the upset.

Elizabethtown will celebrate Senior Day when they host Lycoming on Saturday, March 29, at 1 p.m.
