Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#22/19 Women's basketball hands #2/2 Scranton first loss of season to clinch two-seed

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's basketball team knocked Scranton out of the ranks of the unbeatens on Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium with a 70-64 win over the Royals to deny their perfect season, overall and in-conference. Summer McNulty had a game-high 24 points for the Blue Jays.

Elizabethtown had the ability to clinch the two-seed with a win against Scranton. A loss and a Catholic win would mean coming down to the NPI rankings to decide the two and the three, but the Blue Jays ended up not needing to worry about that at all.

Scranton had the lead early on thanks to Kaci Kranson, who netted a team-high 21 points in the game. The Jays came back with an Ella Gordon three-pointer from the right corner. McNulty added a pair of free throws a few minutes later. She was 8-for-8 at the line in the game and as a unit, the Blue Jays hit 18-of-21. Then, Jess King and DaniRae Renno added baskets in the paint to make it 9-2 through the first four and a half minutes.

Down 13-5 with 2:22 left in the first, the Royals made their run and got even at 13-13 with 32 seconds to go. On Etown's final offensive possession, Lindsay Boyd dished to Grace O'Connor, who hit the open midrange jumper from the left wing to send Elizabethtown into the second quarter ahead 15-13.

McNulty dropped in one of her four treys two minutes into the start of the second to give EC a three-point lead. That quickly turned to a Scranton lead after consecutive threes by the Royals. McNulty answered right back at the other end to tie the game up at 23-23 with 6:13 remaining before half.

Kranson got the Royals a five-point lead on one of her team-high three treys to make it 30-25. Once again, McNulty drilled a three and then, following a Scranton turnover, Allyia Kennedy made them pay with a layup at the other end as the game was once again tied. The Royals had 15 turnovers in the game, tied for their fourth-most this season. Etown scored 18 points off those turnovers.

McNulty and Kennedy combined for 15 of the team's 17 second-quarter points. Cyleigh Wilson hit a floater to start the second for the Jays. McNulty and Kennedy were 8-for-12 with 21 points at the half.

The Jays' defense was locked in, especially to begin the third quarter as they held Scranton scoreless from the field for seven minutes. The Royals netted three from the foul line while Elizabethtown started on an 11-0 run to go ahead 43-32 before the foul shots for Scranton. Kennedy's layup with 3:43 left in the third gave Etown their largest lead of the game at 14, 47-33. They led 53-42 after three.

Elizabethtown limited Scranton to 3-for-13 from the floor, including 0-for-5 from three, in the third quarter. Overall, Scranton shot 6-for-27 from deep to tie for their worst three-point shooting performance of the season.

As good teams are capable of doing, Scranton did chip its way back into the game in the fourth, coming within two at 55-53 with 7:38 remaining in the game.

The Blue Jays responded after Maddie Hartnett's three with a Kennedy layup to give her 15 points in the game. She also drew the foul and completed the three-point play to get the lead back up to five. A little over a minute later, Mummert, who had the assist on Kennedy's and-one, drained a three from the nearside corner to push the lead to eight. Then, after a Scranton miss, McNulty got inside for the layup and the lead was back into double digits with a little over five minutes to go.

Once again, the Royals chipped away and got the deficit down to one possession, 65-62, with 2:34 left.

In the pressure moments with Scranton full court pressing, Elizabethtown handled itself well, inbounding the ball without turning it over, drawing fouls, and hitting free throws when needed. McNulty and Jess King each hit a pair at the line to make it two possession games. McNulty's came with 1:19 showing and King hit two with just eight seconds left. Kennedy blocked a three at the game's closing to emphatically end it as the ball fell to Gordon and time ran out.

Elizabethtown's 70 points are the most Scranton has given up this season after coming into Saturday with a 44.3 points against average. Their 23 field goals tied for their third-fewest along with the third-worst shooting performance of the year.

The win gives the Blue Jays the two-seed as they will host a Landmark Conference semifinal on Thursday, February 27, at 7 p.m. against an opponent to be determined after Tuesday night's First Round games.
