ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman
Shea Sporer picked a great time to score his first career goal as the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team drew with Juniata Tuesday night at Ira R. Herr Field, 1-1.
Juniata zipped around the field over the first 45 minutes of action and that paid off with an early goal.
Jalen Holliday launched a long throw into the Etown box that was headed on by Beckett Young and struck by Jase Colino from out top that found the back of the net in the 10th minute to provide the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Juniata did outshoot the Blue Jays 8-3 in the first half, but outside of Colino's goal, none were on goal.
The momentum shifted coming out of halftime as it was the Jays that were buzzing.Â
As the Eagles did, Elizabethtown grabbed control with Sporer's goal in the 52nd minute. The ball was out for a throw-in, which
Connor Kirchner sent into the Eagles' box.
Aidan Valentine had an attempt blocked, but the rebound went to Sporer, who had come forward out of his center back position. After a quick touch to control the ball, he bent a right-footed shot inside the right post to tie the game at 1-1.
Etown continued pushing as Juniata struggled to maintain the same level of possession of the ball as they had done in the first half.
Pedro Miranda wasn't tested much at all, but the senior came through for his team in the 83rd minute. A corner had been knocked out of the box, but played back in by Juniata. Nathan Weick had it centrally out toward the top of the box and was able to turn and fire toward goal. Miranda was on it, sprawling to his right to get a glove on the shot to keep it out and also save it from becoming another Juniata corner.
The Blue Jays did not allow another shot on goal the rest of the game as they saw the clock out to earn another point via tie.
Elizabethtown heads on the road to take on nationally-ranked Scranton on Saturday, October 11, at 3:30 p.m.
