SCRANTON, Pa. -- After a dead even first quarter, nationally-ranked Scranton pulled away from the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team over the final three quarters to hand the Blue Jays their first conference loss of the season, 82-57.
Summer McNulty had a team-high 17 points.
All five starters recorded points and Elizabethtown was out to a good start from the floor, hitting on nine of their 13 first-quarter attempts, including threes from
Ella Gordon,
Makenna Mummert,
Cyleigh Wilson, and
Lindsay Boyd. Seven different players contributed points as it went 22-22 into the second.
The Jays held a 30-28 lead, but an 18-5 run to close out the half put the Royals up by double digits going into the break. They used 10 forced turnovers to generate 12 points and had 26 points in the paint to grab hold of Wednesday evening's Landmark matchup. Elizabethtown shot just 2-for-9 over the final six minutes of the half.
Scranton continued shooting over 50 percent from the field for the game in the third as they kept their lead in double digits.
The Royals' defense did its job over the final three quarters, holding Etown to just 13 made shots over those 30 minutes after giving up nine on the first 13 in the first. Scranton entered the day with the top-ranked field goal percentage defense in not only the conference, but in Division III.
McNulty and Mummert each hit a pair of threes in the game for Elizabethtown. They finished 7-for-16 in the game. Mummert added 10 points for the Jays.
The Blue Jays will play Wilkes at The Palestra on Sunday, January 12, at noon.
