Men's soccer wins back Smith-Herr Boot on penalties

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team won back the Smith-Herr Boot on Wednesday at Ira R. Herr Field after beating No. 17 Franklin & Marshall on penalties after a scoreless tie in regulation. Gavin Domsohn had the clinching PK for the Blue Jays.

The teams battled between the 18s for much of the game as neither side was able to carve out too many quality chances on goal.

Pedro Miranda made a few sprawling saves in the second half and Aidan Valentine was denied an opportunity to put the Jays ahead.

After a goalless 90 minutes, the teams had pre-determined that if it did end scoreless, they would decide the taker of the Boot with PKs.

Elizabethtown was the first to shoot and Pedro Guizardi stepped up and laced a ball high and left to put the Jays ahead. F&M evened it at 1-1 on their first attempt.

Hudson Peck put his shot out of the keeper's reach low and left to return EC in front, 2-1. The Diplomats, again, were even after their second attempt.

Cade Brubaker smashed his PK middle high and to the left side only to see the Dips level on theirs.

Nikos Gousios was the fourth to go and the sophomore shot hard and high left center to make it four-for-four for Elizabethtown.

Miranda guessed correctly on F&M's fourth shot and made the save to provide Domsohn the opportunity to deliver the Boot and the graduate student did just shot as the goalie went the other way to lift Etown to a 5-3 PK shootout victory.

The Blue Jays will play at Stevenson on Saturday, September 14, at 1 p.m.
