ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's soccer team scored once in each half to come away with a 2-1 season-opening win over Muhlenberg on Friday at Ira R. Herr Field.
Sky Shinnen and
Sara Bean netted goals for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown (1-0-0) was on the attack early and often, forcing the Mules' keeper into five saves in the first 10 minutes of the match.
Marissa Vandernick,
Maddie McWhinney,
Ava Whisten, and Jenna Hoffman each saw chances stopped by the Muhlenberg goalie to keep the game scoreless.
Despite being outshot, the Mules managed to grab a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute. Less than three minutes after making her Etown debut, Shinnen battled through a few tackles to score her first goal in a Blue Jays' uniform to equalize in the 31st minute.
The game went into halftime still tied 1-1.
Kirsten Navich proved to be a tough mark for the Mules' defense as the freshman ran at the left side of their backline all game. Navich had a pair of chances saved by Megan Stairs, but the threat was there for the Jays. A sequence that began with a Navich chance turned into a corner for Elizabethtown that ultimately would wind up as the game-winning goal.
Whisten played a short corner out to
Olivia Herbert near the edge of the box. Herbert's cross made it through a few bodies and in the path of Bean, who struck a ball that squeaked through the keeper and into the back of the net to push Etown in front 2-1 in the 58th minute.
The Jays' defense kept Muhlenberg largely away from
Adrienne McGallicher and
Ella Smith, who came on for the final 20 minutes to make her debut for Elizabethtown. The Mules did not put a shot on target after the 51st minute that resulted in the lone save of the game for McGallicher.
Etown managed the waning moments of the game well and came away with the win to start the season.
The Blue Jays will face their second straight Centennial Conference opponent when they host Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
