Guizardi heads home game-winner as Etown shuts out Alfred

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team got after Alfred in the second half of its non-conference matchup with the Saxons Friday night at Ira R. Herr Field. Pedro Guizardi would head home the eventual game-winner for the Blue Jays as they shut out Alfred 1-0 in the first game of the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay Classic.

Pedro Vinent was inches away from putting Elizabethtown (1-0-0) up in the 10th minute, but a quick reaction save from Tyler Mulholland in front of goal prevented it. Vinent had a second chance saved minutes later as the Jays had the better of the early chances.

Defensively, Etown frustrated the Saxons, who weren't really able to establish much in the attacking third. Pedro Miranda made a pair of easy first-half saves. The game went scoreless into the half.

The Blue Jays set the tone early in the second half as they went after the Saxons and pinned them in their own half for a large chunk of the second 45 minutes. Gavin Domsohn started the second half for Etown and put an early shot on frame, saved by Mulholland to keep it scoreless.

Elizabethtown came at Alfred in waves, generating six corners after earning four in the first half. One of them, coming in the 78th minute, would matter most.

James Abbiss was on the ball far side for the corner and played it short out to Nikos Gousios. The sophomore whipped in a ball that met the head of the Brazilian midfielder, Guizardi, in front of goal and his glancing header found the back of the net to put Etown ahead 1-0.

The Saxons did push for an equalizer, but never truly threatened. Miranda was credited with a save in the final five minutes, but other than that, the Jays' defensive unit did its job.

The win was the first for Evan Scheffey in charge of Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays will host Washington (Md.) on Sunday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m.
