ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.-- The Elizabethtown baseball team grabbed the Landmark Conference series win over Catholic on a very hot Monday afternoon. In their final home game of the season the Blue Jays defeated the Cardinals, 5-1.
Both teams were able to score at least one run in the first inning and the following three innings were scoreless. In the top of the first, Catholic hit a RBI-single to left field to start off with a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning,
David Woolley led off with a single to right center.
Quinten Perilli then doubled to right center which scored Woolley. On a sacrifice bunt then a sacrifice fly, Perilli scored Etown's second run. From there the Blue Jays would hold on to the lead through the rest of the game.
The next several innings were three-up-three-down until Elizabethtown added on another run in the fifth.
Garrett Schwartzbeck led off the inning with a single up the middle. On a sacrifice bunt and an error, Schwartzbeck reached third. After an attempt for an out at home, Schwartzbeck scored. In the top of the sixth with two outs and one Cardinal on base,
Alex McClain made a diving catch as the ball lined out to third base for the final out of the inning.
Elizabethtown recorded two insurance runs in the seventh to secure their 5-1 win over Catholic. Perilli singled reaching first, then
Mason Woolwine smacked a home run to left field.
Etown moves to 28-10 overall and 17-6 in the Landmark while Catholic falls to 29-10 and 16-7.
The Blue Jays close out the regular season with a single game at Lycoming this Friday at 4:00 pm.
