WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team won their first game at Catholic since 2016 after a well-executed fourth quarter set the Blue Jays apart from the Cardinals in a 14-9 win.
Riley Langen had a game-high seven points while
Gavin Gismondi notched a hat trick and
Brayden Franey made 15 saves.
It was an even game through the first two quarters as each team scored twice in the first and three times in the second.
Catholic led 1-0 and 2-1 in the first, but
Ryan Flanegan tied it up late in the opening quarter to make it 2-2.
Alex Kilgour had the first score of the evening for the Jays.
Langen and
Alex Scholl put EC ahead 4-2 in the first couple of minutes of the second quarter. Scholl had the ball coming off a save from Franey and went end-to-end for his second goal of the season.
The Cardinals would rally for three straight to grab a 5-4 lead, but Gismondi took one of Langen's three assists to knot the game up at 5-5 with just over a minute to go before halftime.
Early in the third,
Connor Stewart stripped Brady McMahon of the ball as he was driving toward goal, scooped up one of his six ground balls and went the other way that ended up in his 12th goal of the season. Stewart came up with several key ground balls in the second half for the Blue Jays.
The teams traded the first four goals of the third quarter and were tied 7-7 with 5:04 left in the third. Langen's third of four goals at 4:07 started a 6-0 spurt for Elizabethtown as they broke open the game and took control.
Etown scored two in the first 1:11 of the fourth quarter to really grab hold of the game as
TJ Chapman won the opening face-off, got the ball to
Colin Kondracki, who fed Gismondi in the middle for the quick strike. Less than a minute later, Langen found Flanegan for the man-up goal to make it 10-7. Kilgour would score a few minutes later on an extra man opportunity, his second of the night.
Gismondi, Langen and
Reese Levinson finished out the scoring for EC.
Eric Hoover and
Tristan Coleman had assists on goals for the Jays.
Elizabethtown outscored Catholic 6-2 in the fourth, holding the Cardinals to seven shots and winning seven of the nine face-offs. They held their sixth consecutive Landmark opponent to single-digits goals.
The Blue Jays will host Wilkes on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
