Men's lacrosse hands Scranton first conference loss

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was all Blue Jays all game for the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team on Saturday in a 14-5 win over Scranton at Wolf Field. The Blue Jays won all phases of the game and took it to the Royals, led by Gavin Gismondi's six points and 17 saves in goal from Brayden Franey.

It was the first meeting between the sides since Scranton edged the Jays in May last season for the Landmark title.

Elizabethtown was dialed in from the start and it showed for all 60 minutes. Reese Levinson quickly started the scoring 41 seconds into the game with his first of two on the afternoon. Shortly thereafter, Gismondi created a turnover and Ben Clark picked up the ground ball to start things the other way for the Jays. It ended with Nolan Krasnick feeding Connor Stewart for the goal.

Gismondi would get his with a pair of goals at 9:42 and 5:07 of the first quarter as Etown got out to a 5-0 lead by the end of one. Levinson finished off the first with his second goal of the quarter.

The attack spent plenty of time with the ball thanks to a career-high 18 face-off wins for TJ Chapman. He also had a career-high nine ground balls in the game.

Colin Kondracki and Gismondi tallied to start the second before Scranton could get on the board thanks to Alex Eglitis with 8:00 to go in the half.

It would be 7-1 until the final possession of the half. Franey came up with one of his 17 saves with 55 seconds left and Elizabethtown got across midfield to settle in to their possession and head coach Kyle McGuire called timeout to set up a final play for his guys. Gismondi would pay that off with his fourth of the day, netting the goal with just nine seconds before halftime. EC led 8-1 at the break.

Another face-off win for Chapman to start the third led to Krasnick's goal just 32 seconds into the quarter. A few minutes later, Alex Kilgour picked up a loose ball off a save from Royals' goalie Declan Allen in front of the cage and put it in to get Etown into double digits at 10-1. Gismondi scored the Jays' final goal of the quarter and they led 11-2 after three.

The Blue Jays pressured up the field on the Scranton clears and generated another failed attempt early in the fourth after Chapman won the face-off, picked up the ground ball, got in on goal and hit the post with his shot. The Royals would gain possession, but Gismondi would knock the ball out of Joe Boyle's stick, scooped it up, and fed Riley Langen for the quick transition goal to make it 12-2.

Even the few face-offs Elizabethtown did not win, Franey and the defense were there to make a play. The senior came up big against the Royals with his 17 saves. Kyle Miller filled in the last 1:05 and made one save. The Jays had 11 caused turnovers for the second straight game and the sixth time this season they've accrued 10 or more in a game.

Tristan Coleman (Lucca Scomillio assist) and Kilgour put the Jays ahead 14-2. Scranton was able to score three late in the game to make it 14-5.

Elizabethtown will play at Catholic on Wednesday, April 17, at 6 p.m.
