CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team closed out its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of games on Friday. The Blue Jays dropped both contests, one to Saint Mary's (Minn.) and a nailbiting, 10-inning walkoff loss to Nebraska Wesleyan.
GAME ONE: SAINT MARY'S 11, ELIZABETHTOWN 4
The Cardinal scored multiple runs in each of the first four innings to take a commanding 11-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth.
There was no quit in Elizabethtown (3-5), as they battled and their continued effort paid off with a four-run fourth.
Courtney Oliver and
Hannah Long hit RBI singles in the inning.
Kristen Aydelotte was able to bring Oliver home on a fielder's choice to third and
Kassidy Kehoe brought in the Jays' fourth run with an RBI groundout.
Brooke Huczko was 3-for-4 in the game for Etown.
GAME TWO: NEBRASKA WESLEYAN 12, ELIZABETHTOWN 11 (F/10)
In their nightcap, the Blue Jays were down again early, but their pursuit of the Prairie Wolves got them back in it.
Down 3-0, Etown scored a pair in the top of the second to cut their deficit to one.
Haley Nedo's sacrifice fly to left and
Rachel Allen RBI single down the right field line each brought home a run.
Nebraska Wesleyan (9-4) added three more runs in their home half of the inning to go ahead 6-2.Â
Elizabethtown used a big fourth inning to grab a 9-6 lead, started off by
Hannah Long's bases loaded, two-out RBI walk. Huczko drove in two to make it a 6-5 game with a base knock. Kehoe,
Emily Polimeni and Nedo all had an RBI base hit in the inning as well to put the Jays ahead.
The Wolves were able to tie the game and extend it with three runs in the seventh to force extras.
The two sides matched one another in the eighth and ninth innings with a run apiece as it went into the 10th, 11-11.
Nebraska Wesleyan was able to hold Etown in the top half and then got the walkoff win in the bottom half to take the game, 12-11.
Huczko was 4-for-6 in the game while Polimeni added three hits. Allen went 2-for-4 for the Jays as they racked up 15 hits.
The softball team will host Dickinson for the home opener on Tuesday, March 19, at 3 and 5 p.m.
