CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team nearly came away with an extra innings victory in their first game of the day Monday at The Spring Games against Wentworth, but the Blue Jays made sure to get at least one with a game two win over Saint Vincent.
GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 6, ELIZABETHTOWN 5 (F/9)
Elizabethtown was one the board just three batters into the game as
Kristen Aydelotte smashed a triple to right center to score
Brooke Huczko.
Kassidy Kehoe drove in Aydelotte in the next at-bat, her first collegiate hit and RBI as the Jays went ahead 2-0.
Wentworth (3-0) battled back with a run in the first and four in the second to go ahead 5-2.Â
Maddy Jean and
Gianna Anzideo combined for 5.1 innings of effective relief as they were able to hold the Leopards scoreless in the fourth through seventh innings.
The Blue Jays made their way back in the sixth with three runs to tie the game. Huczko singled in
Courtney Oliver and
Jenna Davis.
Hannah Long also scored on the play as a misthrow from the defense allowed the freshman to score the game-tying run.
Neither side scored in the seventh, so extra innings were needed.
Even with the runner placed on second to begin the innings, the teams couldn't get a run in in the eighth, so the game went to the ninth.
The Jays were held off the board again, and then in the bottom half, a sac fly to deep left allowed the Wentworth runner to score from third to win it for the Leopards.
Huczko and Long each had two hits in the game to lead EC.
GAME TWO: ELIZABETHTOWN 3, SAINT VINCENT 1
All four runs were scored in the second inning, and for Elizabethtown, they put up more than the Bearcats, which mattered most in the end.
A wild pitch allowed the Saint Vincent runner at third to slide in safely at home to give SVC a 1-0 lead in the top half of the frame.
Davis led off the bottom of the second with a single and then moved up a bag on a wild pitch.
Riley Nolan legged out a bunt single as Davis moved up to third. Courtney Davis also singled in the infield and Davis alertly came home on a miscue from the defense to tie the game at 1-1.Â
Now at third, Nolan scored safely on
Emily Polimeni's sacrifice bunt and Huczko followed up with an RBI single to make it 3-1 for the Jays, her third RBI of the day. Huczko also made a stellar running catch in right center, tracking the ball from her center field position and getting it in the webbing of her glove while on the move for the second out of a scoreless sixth.
Sarah Birner got a popup for the first out of the seventh, Kehoe snatched a liner for out number two and Birner flipped the ball to
Skye Zolomij covering second for the final out of the game.
Mikaela Benner got the win with four strong innings, no earned runs and a strikeout. Jean earned the save with three scoreless innings of relief.
The Blue Jays will play another pair of games tomorrow, March 5, at 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.
