LA CROSSE, Wisc. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team will have four representatives competing at the 2024 NCAA Div. III Championships hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
Ethan Liptzin,
Brian Schneider,
Ganon Smith and
Dylan Waller each qualified for the national tournament with top-three placements at the Mideast Regional.
Liptzin, the runner-up at 125 in the Mideast, went 25-6 this season, including an 8-2 dual record for the Blue Jays. The senior was a top-three or better finisher in four tournaments this season. His NCAA Tournament begins with a Friday morning opening match against Gavin Bradley of Castleton.
Schneider qualified for the second straight season at 165 to cap off a tremendous season after returning to Etown for one final year. Schneider had a team-high 29 wins and also led the Jays in pins with 13. He finished first at the Messiah Invitational, Blue Jay Classic and Ken Ober Memorial Tournaments while placing second at the Racich Rumble (Ursinus) and the Mideast Regional at 165. Schneider starts off NCAAs against Patrick Wisniewski of Castleton.
Smith dominated the dual circuit, going a perfect 9-0 for EC while finishing with a 29-4 overall record. He was unbeaten when it came to pins, winning by fall eight times without being pinned. Smith qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season but was unable to compete due to injury. He will get his crack at the national field this weekend with his first match Friday morning against Xavier Preston of Roanoke. Smith was the third-place finisher in the Mideast.
Waller comes in as the Mideast Regional champion at 285 and carries a 28-3 record into NCAAs. The senior went 12-0 in dual matches and an impressive 12-0 mark when it comes to tech falls, which led the team. Waller was second in wins and major decisions for Etown. He was a top-three finisher in the five tournaments he wrestled, winning the Blue Jay Classic and the aforementioned regional. Waller begins his NCAA quest Friday morning against Mitch Williamson of Wartburg.
The four wrestlers are the most Elizabethtown has sent to NCAAs since five went in 2012-13. Etown's best team finish came in 1976-77 when they took ninth.
The NCAA Div. III Championships begin Friday, March 15 with the preliminary rounds at 11 a.m. CT.
