Blue Jays Win Five-Set Thriller over Eastern

ST. DAVID'S, Pa.—In a season re-match between the Elizabethtown men's volleyball team and Eastern, the Blue Jays were once again victorious defeating the Eagles, 3-2.

The team put up a season-high 10 total blocks. Three Blue Jays recorded double-digit kills as Alex Finch and Logan Smith each tallied 18 while Nick Chapman added 15. Nate Seeger grabbed a season-high 53 assists which is just three shy of his career-high.

Two of the five sets at Eastern went to extras as Etown won the third set 26-24 before Eastern took the fourth set, 26-24 to tie it up at 2-2, forcing a fifth set.

Set one was tight, but Elizabethtown had managed to pull ahead 10-7 early after three straight points. The Blue Jays went up by four after two Eastern errors, a kill from Chapman and an ace from Smith. Two Etown kills sandwiched a Mason Boyer ace before the Eagles came within two at 21-19. Etown never gave up their lead as they won, 25-22.

Set two was reversed as Eastern grabbed a 12-9 lead after the teams traded points early in the set. The Blue Jays trailed by one until Eastern was able to record two in a row to lead, 20-17. Through the end of the set the two teams went back and forth with Eastern ultimately winning, 25-22 off a kill.

Elizabethtown jumped to a 7-4 lead in set three after four consecutive points. Finch, Cody Boyer, Seeger, and Smith held strong with blocks on the run. Two straight kills from Finch put Etown up 9-6. Eastern came within two and then took a one-point lead after tallying four in a row. After trading points, Etown finished out the set on a 6-1 run to win, 26-24.

Set four was close as the two were locked at 9-9 after an Elizabethtown service error. Three straight points from Etown put them in front after Smith and M. Boyer blocks. Three straight kills from the Blue Jays extended their lead, 17-12. The Eagles then came within one and Elizabethtown then struggled to keep the lead as they fell, 26-24.

Eastern started up 8-5 in set five forcing the teams to switch net sides. Four straight points from Etown put them in the lead, 9-8. Chapman, Smith, and M. Boyer contributed kills on the run. After four more in a row, Etown was just two away from match point. Two kills from Finch sealed Etown's, 15-12 win.

Elizabethtown will start off their weekend hosting Eastern Mennonite this Friday in CVC play at 7PM.
