Renno reaches 1,000, women's basketball closes out 2024 with big win over Ursinus

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Senior DaniRae Renno became the 31st player in Elizabethtown College women's basketball team history to reach 1,000 career points as the Blue Jays closed out 2024 with a big win over Ursinus at Thompson, 72-46. Summer McNulty and Cyleigh Wilson each had 18 points while Renno recorded 14. Jess King grabbed 11 boards for Etown, who won their eighth straight game in the process.

Elizabethtown had to deal with a sluggish start from the field, only hitting on 5 of their first 17 shots through the first 10 minutes of the game. McNulty, Wilson, and Lindsay Boyd each hit a three to help keep the Blue Jays within a point by the end of one, 14-13. All 14 of Ursinus' points came in the paint.

The momentum of the game shifted in the second quarter as Etown got going from the floor. The Jays shot 8-for-11 as King, Renno, and McNulty all had two makes while Makenna Mummert and Wilson also added to the second quarter scoring. Elizabethtown flipped the script, outscoring the Bears 12-4 in the paint and 20-8 overall in the second to go into the half ahead, 33-22.

Renno, who only needed two points coming into the contest to reach the career milestone, got her bucket on a little floater from the side after McNulty drove and dished to her senior teammate with 7:10 to go in the second quarter to put EC up by four, 20-16. That was part of a 9-0 run for the Jays as they went ahead 22-16 after King's jumper.

Ursinus did not hit a single three-point attempt all night, going 0-for-11 overall, making it tough to come back from a double-digit deficit as Elizabethtown continued it's torrid pace in the second half.

The Blue Jays were 17-for-32 from the field in the second half, and adding in their second quarter shooting, hit on 58 percent of their shots over the final three quarters. Etown outscored Ursinus 39-24 in the second half to open up the lead and beat the Bears by 26.

Chinwe Irondi netted a game-high 28 points for Ursinus on 13-of-21 shooting. The rest of the team combined for 8-of-46 and shot 31.3 percent for the game, their worst shooting performance and lowest point total of the season.

Elizabethtown will play at Rowan on Thursday, January 2, at 6 p.m.
