ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team scored late in the first half and early in the second half as they shut out Drew Saturday afternoon at Herr Field, 2-0, for their first Landmark Conference win of the season.
Both goalies needed to make saves in the first 30 minutes of the game. First it was
Pedro Miranda denying Kevin Martinez in teh 11th minute. On the flip side,
Andrew Merchant's shot from the right side of the box was parried away by David Hoyt.
AJ Sasso pestered the Rangers' back line all game and it was his through ball to
Matt Miller that set up the senior's goal in the 43rd minute. Sasso slipped Miller into the box and his low, driven ball beat the diving attempt by Hoyt and rolled into the far side netting to give Etown a 1-0 lead right before halftime.
Sasso, again, was involved in the Jays' second goal of the game. Merchant put Sasso into the box and the slippery freshman was able to beat out a defender, send a ball into the middle that took a deflection, but fell right at the feet of
Pedro Guizardi. The senior was in the right place at the right time as he smashed a shot underneath the arms of the keeper to make it 2-0 in the 51st minute.
Miranda made two more nice saves on James Cahill in the 54th and 74th minutes.
Jude Ashley was inches away from making it 3-0 in the 80th, but his ball came off the post and a follow-up chance by Sasso was blocked out.
The Jays were able to possess much of the ball as Drew struggled to put together any kind of consistent attack when it needed and EC managed the clock to get the victory.
Miranda made three saves and earned his fourth shutout of the year.
Elizabethtown will host Juniata on Wednesday, October 9, at 7 p.m.
