ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- It was a rout through 45 minutes as the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team had to hold off Goucher in the end for their Senior Day win, 3-2, on Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field.
Three different first-year players had a helping hand, or foot rather, in the victory. First it was
Manny Velazquez thumping a shot from outside the box that caught the underside of the crossbar and bounced down behind the line and then into the roof of the goal in the 25th minute to make it 1-0 for Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays were dominant in the first half, outshooting the Gophers 15-3 and spending far more time on the ball in possession as Goucher struggled to find any sort of rhythm.
In the 36th minute,
Jayden Morris made his way into the attacking end and crossed the ball from the near endline that sailed toward the back post.
Aidan Valentine touched the ball back toward the middle of the box and from a short distance out,
AJ Sasso hit a ball that found the net for his third of the season.
Minutes later, having recently come on to the field,
Caba Alvarez struck a ball that was on the inside of the left post and in, his first career goal for the Blue Jays, to put Etown up 3-0 less than 40 minutes into the contest.
EC led 3-0 at the half.
The Gophers found their footing in the second half and eventually worked their way back into the game, limiting Etown's attack. Goucher drew a ball deep in their attacking end and the resulting set piece went through a number of bodies across goal and ricocheted into the net off the defense to get a goal back for the visitors.
Late in the game, Goucher drew one closer as Michael Adekanmbi slotted a ball over to Andres Aristimuno on the counter.
Elizabethtown was able to hold off the Gophers in the end to collect three points and wrap up a postseason spot.
The Blue Jays will play at Lycoming on Saturday, November 2, at 3:30 p.m.
