ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Maddie McWhinney scored from way out in the first half and her goal was the difference in the game as the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team held off Susquehanna at Ira R. Herr Field on Saturday. The Blue Jays moved to 2-1-1 in the Landmark with the 1-0 win. It was
Adrienne McGallicher's second consecutive shutout.
Both keepers made one save through the first 25 minutes of action as the ball spent much of it's time between the 18 yard boxes.
McWhinney had a go from about 35 yards out in the 30th minute and seemed to catch freshman goalie Katie Henchy off guard a bit as the ball sailed high center for the goal to put Etown ahead 1-0. The last time the River Hawks visited Herr Field, McWhinney had also scored a wonder goal from well outside the box.
McGallicher only needed the one save in the opening 45 minutes while her defense did their part in keeping Susquehanna quiet.
Marissa Vandernick and
Kirsten Navich had early shot attempts stopped by Hency in the first two-plus minutes of the second half. McGallicher made her second save of the day in the 56th minute to keep it 1-0.
The River Hawks pressed for a game-tying goal, but after the 64th minute, did not register another shot on goal after Ava Billmeyer's shot was saved by McGallicher.
The Blue Jays kept the ball out of dangerous spots and were able to run out the clock to earn their second straight conference win.
Etown will host Catholic on Wednesday, October 16, at 7 p.m.
