Wrestling stays unbeaten, keeps belt with win at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team dominated the final four weight classes, and after trailing 16-15, kept their belt in the Battle of the Blue Jays with a 36-16 win at Johns Hopkins on Friday to stay unbeaten.

Anthony Vitola Jr. led off the evening for Elizabethtown (3-0) and earned six early points with an injury default for Johns Hopkins (0-1). Etown kept its lead after Scotty Reagan got a late takedown in his match at 141 with Max Apsel. That made it 9-4 after Hopkins scored a win via major decision at 133.

Then, the two teams traded forfeit wins, with Shane Strausser getting his arm raised by the night's official. Elizabethtown did not have an entrant at 157, so six points right back to JHU to make it 15-10 going into 165.

Jake Hoffmann got the victory with a pin that put Johns Hopkins into the lead for the first, and only time, on the night.

From that point on, it was all Etown. That started with Ganon Smith's pinfall at 0:57 of the first period over Noah Graber. That gave the lead right back to EC, 21-16.

In succession, Will Davis, Trai Roland and Dylan Waller each recorded tech fall victories over their opponents by a combined scored of 55-4. Roland shutout Jack Dunn at 197, while Davis won 20-2 at 184 and Waller capped off the belt retention with an 18-2 triumph. Waller was up 13-2 after one period and started the second down. A quick escape put him one takedown away from the tech and within moments, Waller had Jake Pomykata on the ground and the referee signaled for the three points and the end of the match.

Elizabethtown will be right back in action against Gettysburg tomorrow afternoon in Thompson Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
